Video Killed The Radio Star Idea

Video Killed The Radio Star Idea

Unfortunately we scrapped our idea using 'Sit Down' by James as we thought the chair duets would be difficult to choreograph and might get repetitive and boring after a while. Our idea was also too similar to the actual video as they use chairs in the majority of that video. We also decided we weren't that keen on the song choice. However we still liked our idea of using an old song and modernising it to give a new outlook on the song. Because of this, we began looking for other eighties songs that we could use. Unfortunately we didn't like any of the songs suggested to us or we could not come up with an idea.
Eventually we came up with the idea of using the classic song 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by The Buggles and taking the old theme and relating it to the high use of downloads on the internet and the high level of piracy and the decrease in the purchase of CD's.

We had the idea that the song could communicate the issues of media in the online age and how technology is now killing the use of CD's and making it incredibly hard for artists to establish themselves and make a living out of making music. This is a similar theme to the original song, the song is just talking about different technology with the same idea. We also thought we could explain the idea of the pressures of glamour and fame in the video by showing an example of the 27's club, where stars have been killed by the fame lifestyle. Such stars include Amy Winehouse and Jimi Hendrix.

We had the idea that we were going to have a storage space with a pile of blank dusty old-fashioned televisions. Removal men are going to enter the space and place down a radio/boombox and press play. This is when the song will start. Following this the performance element will be seen on the television screens with the band playing on the television screens. For example, as seen below.
We would then have the camera zoom into a screen and have the band playing in a space with a Top of the Pops feel with a tag line on the bottom saying the year and the song and the band. We had the idea to go through the generations and have stereotypes of the band in 60's outfits, 70's outfits, 80's outfits, 90's outfits and outfits from the 21st century. In between each generation we would zoom out of the screen and back to the pile of televisions where the removal men are taking away the televisions and replacing them with plasma screens, representing how the song is still relevant.

The televisions that are removed are placed in another pile but in the wrong order so the picture is distorted.
