 Industry Experience

Today we had a talk from Emily Tedrake, a commissioning editor at Polydoor Records, part of the Universal Music Group.
Her job involves talking to the artists, sending out the ideas to directors and receiving the treatments from the directors. One of the things she mentioned is that a music video is a promotional tool for the artist and is a part of the marketing campaign. The budget can vary widely from small time artists with a limited budget of £1000 to big time artists with a budget varying from £50,000 to £100,000. Bearing this in mind the budget widely shapes the type and style of the music video. One thing I picked up from the talk is that whenever writing a treatment, we should be able to summarise the music video idea in a few lines and make it clear what intends to happen as this is the first thing that the artists will read and decide whether they want to keep reading for the explanation. I intend to bear this in mind when writing my treatment for my music video idea. I must also include pictures as it makes it easier for the reader to visualise the idea and how the music video will work. Pictures are important as they help to suggest the context, theme and helps to show the vision of the director, make the idea more realistic and give the artist an idea as to what the props and actors will look like.

Star image is important as the music video must represent the star and help contribute to the star image. The music video must represent the genre of the star's image.
It is important to remember that the music video is part of a campaign, including the album and the website we will be creating. It is better if the artist is in the music video to promote the artist themselves and not all artists need a narrative story, sometimes performance is all the artist needs. We can also use location and studio to record our music videos as sometimes post production is needed.
Below is one of the videos that Emily Tedrake worked on. She explained the budget and the issues that she experienced when working on that shoot.

  1. Detailed and knowledgeable understanding evident of Emily’s talk. You seem to have benefited with the professional speaker providing information on actual practice. I like the way in which you have used this information and blogged this in relation to your coursework planning. Hopeful you will use this to good effect when you produce a treatment and timeline for your music video this week. I also feel that you have produced some excellent blog entries which have either developed your research and planning in to a range of artist’s bands and subsequent products. I also enjoy seeing your concept being nurtured to ensure the right concept for your single release …so well done.
