Who would produce and distribute our film? Evaluation Task 3

Who would produce and distribute our film?

I think if I had the choice of who would produce our thriller I would pick Ealing Studios.  This is purely because a UK production company like Ealing Studios would involve a smaller budget, at an average of 500,000 thousand just like Vertigo with Monsters, instead of the US production company which is averaging at more than $60,000,000 per film.  It is the oldest continuously working studio facility for film production in the world, so is well known and would attract new audience and the older generation who know Ealing Studios created classics, for example 'The LadyKillers' which is now a stage production.
The BBC owned and filmed at the Studios for forty years from 1955 until 1995 which is good because it means it has connections and could maybe get our thriller shown on the BBC television channels or advertised on the BBC radio stations.

Having a smaller budget is not necessarily a bad thing as thrillers do not have to be flashy with gadgets or fast cars, they can instead be made well with a small budget and could actually be more thrilling with a more simple set. Ealing Studios also focuses on international sales maybe more than other UK Production companies, they would be able to get our thriller all around the world efficiently, therefore creating a larger fan base. UK Productions are also less likely to have famous actors involved, which for a suspenseful thriller is ideal as having a famous actor could distract from the storyline or maybe detract some from watching the film if they did not like that actor. A thriller would work better in a simple location, like London, rather than a glamorous location, for example, Malibu. We would have to have two or three different companies coming together to finance the film with Ealing Studios being the main financier. Ealing Studios has also got an upcoming thriller, directed by Pete Travis, therefore they have experience which is another good reason for picking them. However, after further research i have discovered that Ealing Studio does not distribute the films themselves, so we would work with vertigo films as they are one of the most upcoming and prominent companies and have many connections. They are famous for producing and distributing such famous films, for example Streedance and Monsters. They are a low budget company which is realistic. Traditionally British distribution is UK based and distribution could then be sold on for the rest of the world. We could try and get in touch with Film Four and see if they would want to help produce our thriller, that way our thriller would show on Film Four a few times, increasing our audience and the likelihood of the DVD being bought when it goes straight to DVD. We could sell our film to be available on companies, such as Netflix and LoveFilm. We could have it screened at art and independent cinemas to increase our audience. Ealing Studios would sell the rights of the film to other countries, as that is what Ealing Studios specialises in, and would increase the popularity of the film as it would be displayed to a wider population. Ealing Studios claims to be "the only British studio that produces and distributes feature films as well as providing facilities". Ealing Studios does not have a specific film genre they focus on, they broaden their range and include all genres of movies, ranging from the drama King's Speech to the comedy St Trinians. Likewise Ealing Studios' target audience ranges greatly from the teenagers watching St Trinians to the adults watching The King's Speech. This is beneficial as it could bring in a range of people to watch our thriller, for example the adults who enjoyed The King's Speech and the younger generation who enjoyed St Trinians.
